Study Guide 1 for the Gospel of Luke

This will be posted to accompany Programs #4 & 5 and subsequent programs in which Pastor Jim deals with the Roman Catholic doctrine of Mary.

We are introducing a new outreach to Catholic visitors to our TFW Facebook page. After a quick discussion of Pastor Jim’s teaching (listen to the program for a fuller understanding), we will be announcing our special offer to Catholic visitors.

Pastor Jim: “The Roman Church got it very wrong in their translation of the original Greek language in the scholar Jerome’s Latin Vulgate edition. In Luke 1:28, the angel Gabriel says, “Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you.” However, the words were mistranslated to imply that Mary herself was the source of that grace instead a mere recipient.

This translation error (and others) eventually led the Catholic Church to exalt Mary to nearly the 4th Person of the Trinity, claim that she was (like Christ) also immaculately conceived, and that she is a Mediatrix (intercessor). This is Mariolatry (idolatry of Mary), and it’s the Devil’s diversion.”

Study Guide 2 for the Gospel of Luke

This will be posted to accompany Program #7, 30 & 31 and later ones in which Pastor Jim makes applications from Luke to the doctrine of the Roman Catholic Church.

We are introducing a new outreach to Catholic visitors to our TFW Facebook page. After a quick discussion of Pastor Jim’s teaching (listen to the program for a fuller understanding), we will be announcing our special offer to Catholic visitors.

Pastor Jim: “Elizabeth and john spoke up and insisted that their son was to be name John, even thought this was against human tradition (no one in their family was named this). So, be careful that in your personal life and your church life that you don’t get hung up on tradition that contradicts revelation.”

Here is a link to an excellent article on bereanbeacon.org and a short excerpt:

Matthew Cserhati  Introductory Questions

“What is truth? And how can we ascertain what the truth is? According to the Protestant churches, the sole highest authority in determining truth is the Scripture alone. As opposed to this, the Roman Catholic Church claims that besides Scripture, her oral tradition also has authority:

“As a result the Church, to whom the transmission and interpretation of Revelation is entrusted, ‘does not derive her certainty about all revealed truths from the holy Scriptures alone. Both Scripture and Tradition must be accepted and honored with equal sentiments of devotion and reverence.’”[1]

This is a bold claim.  Many of the Roman Catholic Church’s teachings, such as Mary’s eternal virginity, the papacy, and the doctrine of Purgatory, are defended by her oral tradition. Without tradition, these teachings of the Roman Catholic church would have no support whatsoever.”

Study Guide 3 (Monasticism, Asceticism and Mysticism) for the Gospel of Luke

Copyright 2020 by PGG

This will be posted to accompany Program #53 (Luke 9:37-43) and later ones in which Pastor Jim makes applications from Luke to the doctrine of the Roman Catholic Church.

We are introducing a new outreach to Catholic visitors to our TFW Facebook page. After a quick discussion of Pastor Jim’s teaching (listen to the program for a fuller understanding), we will be announcing our special offer to Catholic visitors.

In this passage, Pastor Jim describes the dangers of the desire to remain in seclusion after “mountain top” experiences with God. For example, due to the co-opting of the Christian church by Constantine and subsequent Roman emperors, paganism crept into to the church. As a result, true Christians no longer felt welcome amongst the syncretistic practices.

Many sought refuge from this apostasy by moving away from cities. One of the earliest examples of this was Anthony. The great defender of Trinitarian doctrine, Athanasius, wrote a glowing biography of Anthony. However, as the saying goes, two wrongs don’t make a right. Monasticism was the wrong response to the wrong done to the Christian church by Constantine. As a result, this error led to even greater error and abuse.

Study Guide 4 for the Gospel of Luke-Salvation by Works of Merit

This will be posted to accompany Program #87 and later ones in which Pastor Jim makes applications from Luke to the doctrine of the Roman Catholic Church on this subject.

We are introducing a new outreach to Catholic visitors to our TFW Facebook page. After a quick discussion of Pastor Jim’s teaching (listen to the program for a fuller understanding), we will be announcing our special offer to Catholic visitors.

Here is an excellent article from former priest, Richard Bennett:

Official Catholic Teaching (on Works):

Summary

The full picture of the Roman Catholic salvation process begins with new birth, which is said to occur in infant baptism and which purportedly washes away original sin.  The process of salvation is a long journey through all the sacraments, with the Sacrifice of the Mass being central to most events.  Good works, merit, sacraments and saints, are all involved, but the focal point is always on inner moral goodness which one is always attempting to increase in order to be good enough to die in “sanctifying grace” and then to be saved or at least to land for a time in purgatory.  In the Roman teaching, no assurance of salvation is ever given, even to the most devout.

Starting Point

The first major difference between biblical truth and Roman Catholic teaching is moral condition of the individual needing reconciliation of man with God.  Ephesians 2:1 states clearly the moral condition of a person before conversion, “And you has He quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins.”  Colossians 2:13 also states the moral condition clearly, “And you, being dead in your sins….”Because of Adam’s sin mankind is born spiritually dead. Romans 3:10-11 clearly depicts mans state, “As it is written, ‘There is none righteous, no, not one:  there is none that understands, there is none that seeks after God.”

Quite different to this, is the proclamation of Rome,

“. . . Nevertheless man has been wounded by sin.  He finds by experience that his body is in revolt.  His very dignity therefore requires that he should glorify God in his body, and not allow it to serve the evil inclinations of his heart… When he is drawn to think about his real self he turns to those deep recesses of his being where God who probes the heart awaits him, and where he himself decides his own destiny in the sight of God ”.[9]

In contrast to the Biblical position of being spiritually dead, Rome stresses, human dignity and the ability to effectively choose good.  Thus the Vatican council 11 states,

“Man gains such dignity when, ridding himself of all slavery to the passions, he presses forward towards his goal by freely choosing what is good, and, by his diligence and skill, effectively secures for himself the means suited to this end.  Since human freedom has been weakened by sin it is only by the help of God’s grace that man can give his actions their full and proper relationship to God.”[10]

If one is ever to understand the good news of the gospel, one must begin biblically with the bad news that of himself man cannot secure his own destiny before the All Holy God because he is spiritually dead in trespasses and sins.

Study Guide 5 for the Gospel of Luke-Transubstantiation

Copyright 2020 by PGG

This will be posted to accompany Programs #97 & 98, in which Pastor Jim makes applications from Luke to the doctrine of the Roman Catholic Church on this subject.

We are introducing a new outreach to Catholic visitors to our TFW Facebook page. After a quick discussion of Pastor Jim’s teaching (listen to the program for a fuller understanding), we will be announcing our special offer to Catholic visitors.

Here is an excerpt from an excellent article from former priest, Richard Bennett’s website:

Official Teaching on Transubstantiation:

  1. Roman Catholic Concept of “Transubstantiation” Must Be Seen in the Light of Scripture.
  2. The Roman Catholic Church claims a change of substance
    in the communion elements.
  3. The concept of “transubstantiation” was officially introduced into the RC Church in 1215 AD at the Lateran Council under Innocent III.
  4. The roots of the concept can be found from after the Second Council of Nicea, when images of Christ were officially sanctioned in AD 787.  The physics behind it is that of the pagan philosopher, Aristotle.  Present-day Rome continues to teach this medieval tradition in the following,

“…this holy Council now declares again, that by the consecration of the bread and wine there takes place a change of the whole substance of the bread into the substance of the body of Christ our Lord and of the whole substance of the wine into the substance of his blood.  This change the holy Catholic Church has fittingly and properly called transubstantiation.’”[13]

  1. This absurd conviction that defies the truth of Scripture, the evidence of the senses, and even reason itself is taught adamantly by the Church of Rome.  So, she summaries in paragraph 1375, “It is by the conversion of the bread and wine into Christ’s body and blood that Christ becomes present in this sacrament….”[14] Biblically, this is a denial of Christ’s words and the words of the Apostle Paul.
  2. The actual words of Scripture must be seen in context.
  3. In the passages of Scripture concerning the Last Supper, the elements retain the same name after the Lord’s words as before he spoke, “Take, eat; this. The demonstrative pronoun “this” means this bread.  There is nothing else that it can mean.  The Scripture continually calls that which Christ gave to his disciples bread, “For as often as ye eat this bread,” “…whosoever shall eat this bread,” “But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread” (I Corinthians 11:26, 27, 28).  The relative pronoun “this” limits the element spoken about to the same that Christ took; no other explanation is possible.
  4. Similarly Christ calls that which he gave the disciples to drink “wine.”  “For this is my blood of the new testament, …but I say unto you, I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom” (Matthew 26:28, 29).  “This is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many.  Verily I say unto you, I will drink no more of the fruit of the vine, until that day that I drink it new in the kingdom of God” (Mark 14:24, 25).

Finally, because Catholics believe that the bread actually becomes the body of the Lord Jesus Christ, they WORSHIP the element:

  1. The Roman Catholic Church teaches that the communion bread is to be worshiped as God.
  2. Vatican Council II documents state, “There should be no doubt in anyone’s mind ‘that all the faithful ought to show to this most holy sacrament the worship which is due to the true God, as has always been the custom of the Catholic Church. Nor is it to be adored [worshipped] any the less because it was instituted by Christ to be eaten. For even in the reserved sacrament he is to be adored [worshipped] because he is substantially present there through that conversion of bread and wine.”[12]

Study Guide 6 for the Gospel of Luke-Papal Glory

This will be posted to accompany Program #99, in which Pastor Jim makes applications from Luke to the doctrine of the Roman Catholic Church on this subject.

Official Teaching on Papal Glory

The Vatican officially teaches that the Pope is the substitute for Christ Jesus.  The words of the official pronouncement are,

“The Pope, Bishop of Rome and Peter’s successor, ‘is the perpetual and visible source and foundation of the unity both of the bishops and of the whole company of the faithful.’  ‘For the Roman Pontiff, by reason of his office as Vicar of Christ, and as pastor of the entire Church has full, supreme, and universal power over the whole Church, a power which he can always exercise.”

Since the world has a man in position of “Vicar of Christ,” it is the biblical imperative to see the true office of the Vicar of Christ.  The Lord Jesus Christ entrusted the universal care of the redeemed into the safekeeping of the divine Person of the Holy Spirit.  Concerning this third Person of the Trinity who was to be His substitute, the Lord promised that, “when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment.”  The Holy Spirit convicts of sin as He makes the sinner realize his lost condition, and convicts him of his need of Christ’s righteousness.  He it is who brings a soul dead in sin to life in Christ.  This miracle of grace is spoken of in Scripture as, “the exceeding greatness of His power to us toward those who believe, according to the working of His mighty power, which He wrought in Christ when He raised Him from the dead.”  The majesty, greatness, and indescribable power of the office of Vicar of Christ are such that a believer stands in awe of His divine Person.  That any human being should lay claim to the office of Vicar of Christ is totally absurd and blasphemous.
