James

14 February 2022 - 24 March 2022

James is one of the earliest NT documents, authored not by James the apostle, but by James the brother of our Lord and leader of the church in Jerusalem. In coloration, it is perhaps the most Jewish of all the epistles: simple, blunt, but full of godly wisdom, rich in exhortation, comforting the afflicted and afflicting the too comfortable. In it, one hears many echoes of the OT wisdom literature, especially the Proverbs, as well as the Sermon on the Mount. James is an eminently practical epistle that emphasizes that faith is not just talk, but must be verified by walk. For that reason, it has been misunderstood by many who think of Christian faith largely in terms of mere creedal affirmations. James makes it loud and clear that if our faith does not walk the talk, it is stillborn.
